Carrie P. Meek Outstanding Education Leadership Achievement Award

Description

The Black Heritage Council award is given annually to an individual that has demonstrated significant progress toward the betterment and acknowledgement of underrepresented Blacks of all cultures and heritages. The recipient will be recognized at the annual Carrie P. Meek Outstanding Education Leadership Award ceremony in February.

Categories for Qualification Eligibility:

  1. Educator

This person may be a current or past educator of the tri-county area (Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach County) school system who has:

    • Engaged Black students of all cultures and heritages through the imaginative implementation of innovative or traditional teaching
    • Encouraged Black students of all cultures and heritages to participate in extra curricular and/or community service-related activities
    • Contributed to the implementation or development of culturally-sensitive curriculum in his/her school
    • Served/(s) as a mentoring figure within his/her community
  1. Administrator

This person may be a current or past administrator of the tri-county area (Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach County) school system who has:

    • Encouraged faculty and staff members to educate students about Black history and the important contributions made in this country by Blacks of all cultures and heritages
    • Implemented curriculum, extra-curricular activities, and/or special programs geared at educating students about Black heritage
    • Inspired faculty, staff, and/or students of color to strive to achieve goals at one’s optimal potential
    • Served/(s) as a mentoring figure within his/her community
  1. Community Leader

This person may be a community leader of tri-county area (Miami-Dade, Broward, or
Palm Beach County) who has:

    • Made a significant impact toward the betterment of Blacks of all cultures and heritages in our nation within his/her jurisdiction
    • Emphasized the importance of education to Blacks of all cultures and heritages and the community at large
    • Continually encouraged the celebration of Black History Month
    • Served/(s) as a mentoring figure within his/her community

 

Nominations

Nominations that demonstrate extraordinary contributions and excellence in meeting the BHC Award criteria will receive the highest consideration. Each nomination must be accompanied by a cover sheet that includes the following information:

  1. The name of the nominee
  2. The award category ( Educator, Administrator, Community Leader)
  3. The name of the nominator
  4. How the nominee exemplifies the criteria for the award

The Selection Committee

The selection committee is made up of the Black Heritage Council membership.  The membership’s profile includes educators who are affiliated with or teach at the college/university level.  The committee will review all the eligible applicants prior to the Carrie P. Meek Outstanding Education Leadership Award ceremony in February of the applicable year and make a final decision during a BHC meeting.  The BHC will make approve the  nominee/recipient of the BHC award.

The Selection Process

The deadline for nominations is January 31, 2012.  The award recipient will be notified on or before February 11, 2012. Winners will be announced and presented at the annual award ceremony featuring our keynote speaker, which will be held on February 31, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at:
