DR.MICHAEL KLONSKY DIRECTOR OF THE SMALL SCHOOLS WORKSHOP BECOMES VISITING PROFESSOR AT FISCHLER SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AND HUMAN SERVICES AT NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY

Dr. Michael Klonsky, Director of the Small Schools Workshop (SSW) in Chicago, Illinois is a Visiting Professor at the Fischler Schools of Education and Human Services at Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Klonsky, the Director of the Small Schools Workshop, heads a nationally recognized provider of training, technical assistance, research, and professional development programs for public schools and public school districts. His work since 1991 focuses on the restructuring of large elementary and secondary schools into smaller and more effective learning environments. The Small Schools Workshop also assists policy makers and school leaders engaged in promoting smaller public schools. The training includes district-level leaders and educational leadership which matches our mission and emphasis on educational leadership.

The SSW started at the University of Illinois Chicago in 1991 remains deeply involved in work with Chicago schools. Over the past six years, the SSW has expanded nationally. Dr. Klonsky assisted in the design of the authorizing legislation for the federal Smaller Learning Communities (SLC) grant program. He has provided training and technical assistance to many districts which are recipients of SLC grant funds. This includes several school districts in the state of Florida, as well as other states. For the past four years, SSW has held an annual winter conference in Florida in partnership with school districts primarily in the Gulf Coast region. With the involvement of NSU, Dr. Klonsky seeks to expand this effort statewide. He has organized the next conference in Miami on January 10-12, 2006.

Dr. Klonsky is also a well known speaker and author of books such as “Small Schools :Simple Justice”. He writes articles frequently such as the one in the February edition of “Educational Leadership” in the well-known Kappan magazine. He is a major scholar who will add to the illustrious group of nationally known professors in educational leadership and school reform. Dr. Klonsky is opening a Coalition of Essential Schools Center in Florida which will have a public presence here and be easily located by schools seeking technical support as they endeavor to redesign themselves. Dr. Klonsky will also work with the National Career Academy Coalition (NCAC), which is operated out of FSEHS and is committed to urban public schools and high school redesign.

Dr. Singleton, Provost of FSEHS has stated that “Dr. Klonsky will be a rich resource and scholarly addition to our Faculty”. He has been asked to develop a “webinar” series with other national authorities on small schools and school safety and on-line discussions for the FSEHS.
