Article by Carmen Garrandes

The CPC PRC workshop was held on October 11, 2007 and was done in two parts. Carmen Garrandes, Parent Liaison for Nova Southeastern University, Florida School Choice Resource Center, first went with the different School Choice Options in Florida and distributed pamphlets on Corporate Tax Credit Scholarship, Opportunity Scholarship Program, Home Education, McKay Scholarship for Students with Disabilities Program, Virtual Education, and Charter Schools.  Ms. Garrandes also spoke to the parents about Magnet Schools and the NCLB.  They had many questions about the different options, and Ms. Garrandes informed the parents that she would be going into more details in the upcoming Choice Chats held throughout the school year.

The second part of the session was on Parent attitude and was presented by Maria Rivero.  Parent attitude is a Module from the Passport to Success training program, and PASS stands for Parents assuring Student Success.  In this Module, parents are educated on what is attitude, why is attitude important and having a positive attitude takes a lot of effort, but it is worth it.  A positive attitude in the home is a positive attitude at school and learning.
