Description Clusters
The Choice Program was developed by a focus group of district principals. First implemented during the 1998/99 school year at the high school level. Over the next two years, it was expanded to the elementary and middle school levels.
Elementary- Four cluster areas.
Middle schools divided into 2 regions, may go within the region.
High School is district wide.
8 Charter Schools.
10 Magnet Schools.
33 traditional public elementary, middle, and high schools.
High School Academy.
Tech Prep Program.
Home Education Programs.
Over 30 private schools.
Choice is available only to upcoming 9th and 10th graders (not 11th and 12th). There is a Parent Information Center which provides information and registration for School Choice.
Mentee District= Lee County is moving to clusters similar to Manatee.
Transportation Information Transportation provided within designated clusters.
High school- transportation provided only to IB program at southeast.
Middle school- two regions
Elementary- four clusters

There is a general application period (January/February- rank order 4 schools), Targeted population period (May), and the Special Choice Period (determined by state and federal requirements).
The targeted population period is for all incoming kindergarten students and specially targeted population groups who were under-represented in the general application period.
The Special Choice Period is limited to students who are made eligible for choice under state and federal mandates (NCLB, etc.).
