    Abstract

Development and Implementation of a Program for At-Risk High School Students.

Mueller, John, 2004. Project Report, Nova Southeastern University, Fischler Graduate School of Education.

    Descriptors: High School Dropouts/Dropout Prevention/Potential Dropouts/Peer counseling/At-Risk Students/Academic Failures/Computer Assisted Instruction.

This 12-week program was developed and implemented to help identify, give direction to, and build self-confidence in potential dropouts during their early high school years. The objectives for the program were for the students to set personal academic goals in peer mentoring sessions, increase reading skills, improve school attendance, and pass a minimum of six classes.

The target group was required to take three academic courses; English, math, and American history. Additional courses with newly created computer assisted instruction formats were an employability-skills class and an on-the-job training block as part of implementation. All program objectives were met with the target group improving by a minimum of 50% in all areas. Appendixes include all target group scores, a parent permission form and a work evaluation form.
