Applied Field and Professional Experiences (Capstones)

Each student’s program outline includes one of the following “capstones”:
All of these capstone courses are closed to online registration (i.e., you cannot register yourself in WebStar) and require submission of:
- an application that is available online and
- a Student Transaction Form
Some capstone courses require the completion of additional forms, as well. After the application has been approved, the student will be registered for the course.
1. Applied Professional Experience |
CSE, EC, ECSE, ELE, EM, ENG, EP, ESE, LANG, SCI, TSOL, & URBE 699 |
The Applied Professional Experience (APE) (3 credits) courses require a certain number of hours of field experience in educational settings appropriate for the specialization. For more information about the course requirements, please download the syllabus for the individual course for which you plan to apply. These are 8-week courses. The schedule for these courses is available at http://www.schoolofed.nova.edu/gtep/info/sites.htm.
These courses are for students not seeking initial certification.

Follow the directions on the application form for submission . Check the GTEP schedule to determine when a particular APE course will be offered.
[Note: Students must apply for course admission at least three weeks prior to the beginning of the session in which they wish to take this course.]
All applied professional experience courses require a minimum of 24 completed credits (33 for ESE), which must include CUR 526, EDU 601, and EDU 5000. Students must have access to an educational setting for the full eight weeks. |
2. Applied Field Experience |
APR 650, APR 750, RED 587, & RED 588 |
The Applied Field Experience courses (field-based project or practicum) involve the design and implementation of an education-related project appropriate to each student’s specialization in an educational setting. These courses run the full term (16 weeks). For more information about the course requirements, please download the syllabus for the individual course for which you plan to apply. The schedule for these courses is available at http://www.schoolofed.nova.edu/gtep/info/sites.htm.
APR 650, APR 750, and RED 587 begin either Fall I or Winter I and run the full semester term—16 weeks. These courses are not offered during the Summer term.
APR 650 (Master’s level) and APR 750 (Ed.S. level) (3 credits) are for students not seeking initial certification. These courses may be taken at a site or online.
The Reading Practicum, RED 587 (3 credits) and RED 588 (6 credits, Nevada only), is for students who may wish to pursue an endorsement or certification in reading (check with your state’s department of education for specific requirements). In Nevada, RED 588 may start Fall I, Winter I, or Summer I. Students have up to a year to complete the requirements of this course.

4. Capstones for Students Seeking Initial Certification |
Teaching Internship/Externship - EDU 688 & 689 |
All students seeking initial teaching certification must complete an internship (EDU 688) or externship (EDU 689). Go to http://www.schoolofed.nova.edu/gtep/icp/index.html for information and the application.
[Note: Students must apply for admission to EDU 688 several months prior to the term in which they wish to begin their internship. See the website above for specific dates. Any student in an initial certification program who has been hired as a teacher may apply to take the externship in any term following the beginning of his/her employment.] |
Administration - EL 698 & 699 |
All students seeking educational leadership certification must complete an administrative internship (EL 698 or EL 699). Go to : http://www.schoolofed.nova.edu/edleader/edlinternapp.pdf for the application.
