Applied Field and Professional Experiences (Capstones)
Information and Links to Applications
Each student’s program outline includes one of the following “capstones”:
All of these capstone courses are closed to online registration (i.e., you cannot register yourself in WebStar) and require submission of:
- an application that is available online and
- a Student Transaction Form
Some capstone courses require the completion of additional forms, as well. After the application has been approved, the student will be registered for the course.
1. Applied Professional Experience |
CSE, EC, ECSE, ELE, EM, ENG, EP, ESE, IDDE, LANG, MAT, SCI, SST, TSOL, & URBE 699 ITEP LANG, ITEP ESE, ITEP SCI |
The Applied Professional Experience (APE) (3 credits, one session, 7-8 weeks) courses require a certain number of hours of field experience in one or more educational settings appropriate for the specialization. Notice that this application requires the consent of the administrator and the Student Transaction Form, which is the last page of this form. When these courses will be offered is provided on the form, but you need to go to the online schedule at http://www.schoolofed.nova.edu/iap/schedule.htm to obtain the CRN to add to the Student Transaction Form. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

Note: Students must apply for course admission at least three weeks prior to the beginning of the session in which they wish to take this course.
All applied professional experience courses require a minimum of 24 completed credits (33 for ESE and MAT; 18 for IDDE), which must include EDU 5000, CUR 526, and EDU 601 (except IDDE, which does not require EDU 601). Students applying for ECSE 699 must have also completed EP 5265, EP 5270, and EP 5275. Students must have access to an educational setting for the full session.
If you need a placement in a school, contact the Office of Placement Services at 954-262-8561 (1-800-986-3223, ext. 28561) to arrange your placement within a school in any given school district. Certain requirements must be met, such as gaining security clearance, and they vary from district to district. 2. Applied Field Experience |
APR 650, APR 750, & RED 587 |
The Applied Field Experience courses (field-based project or practicum) involve the design and implementation of an education-related intervention project appropriate to each student’s specialization in an educational setting. These courses run the full term (16 weeks). APR 650, APR 750, and RED 587 begin either Fall I or Winter I and run the full semester term—16 weeks. These courses are not offered during the Summer term.
APR 650 (Master’s level) and APR 750 (EdS level) (3 credits) are for students not seeking initial certification. These courses may be taken at a site or online.
The Reading Practicum, RED 587 (3 credits) is for students who may wish to pursue an endorsement or certification in reading (check with your state’s department of education for specific requirements).

4. Capstones for Students Seeking Initial Certification |
Teaching Internship/Externship - EDU 688 & 689 |
All students seeking initial teaching certification must complete an internship (EDU 688) or externship (EDU 689). Go to http://www.schoolofed.nova.edu/gtep/icp/index.html for information and the application.
Note: Students must apply for admission to EDU 688 several months prior to the term in which they wish to begin their internship. See the website above for specific dates. Any student in an initial certification program who has been hired as a teacher may apply to take the externship in any term following the beginning of his/her employment. |
Administration - EL 698 & 699 |
All students seeking educational leadership certification must complete an administrative internship (EL 698 or EL 699). Go to: http://www.schoolofed.nova.edu/edleader/edlinternapp.pdf for the application.
Note: students must apply for course admission at least six weeks prior to the term in which they wish to begin their internship. |
