TEFL

The Master of Science degree in Education with a specialization in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (M.S. in TEFL) gives students a background in the theory and practice of teaching English as a foreign language.  It will allow students to further develop their English language teaching skills or to begin a specialized career in the field of English as a foreign language. Such a program will take advantage of qualified faculty expertise already present within the Fischler School of Education and Human Services. The M.S. in TEFL can prepare students for careers in education, translation, materials development, as well as careers as professional writers for magazines, newspapers, and businesses. This degree program will also be attractive to adults who are presently employed, but who would like to pursue a graduate degree that will enhance their career opportunities in the United States and abroad by providing further employment opportunities that result from having a degree focused on international language development.

  • Program Description

Representing the cutting edge of international curriculum design, The M.S. in TEFL is comprised of three distinct parts:

  1. A foundational core set of required classes (21 credits)
  2. Three elective options (12 credits)

The three options are composed of a twelve credit area of interest.

  • Option A- Applied Linguistics
This option provides for a second language teaching and learning sequence.  Students taking this section will probably be seeking a more substantial knowledge base in second language teaching and learning, as well as an in depth appreciation of the structure of English.

  • Option B- Technology
This option represents a departure from the standard linguistic approach of second language learning and will provide the student with an expertise in the use of technology to teach English as a foreign language.

  • Option C- University Partnership
This option offers a unique university partnership articulation model.  Subject to agreements between NSU-FSEHS and a foreign university, twelve credits may be earned through an articulation agreement with a foreign university partnership.  This provides the international student with a local university host contact and a savings in tuition.
  1. Three possible Applied Professional Experience options (3 credits)
  • TESOL 699 is designed as a standard United States based field experience.  If students located in the United States wish a field experience in the United States, they would choose this option. This course will require a true bilingual or foreign language teaching experience.

  • TEFL 698 is designed to provide the field experience in a foreign host setting.

  • TEFL 697 is for the student who has successfully completed an International TEFL certificate. This qualification may be submitted to the TEFL faculty for review and approval, and the Field Experience requirement may be fulfilled with this certificate.
