DAVID SPANGLER, Ph.D.(Program Administrator/Artistic Director)

David Spangler Dr. Spangler graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University with post-graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh and Kansas State University and at The Union Institute and University, where he currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Theatre. He has worked professionally in theatre, film, and television as a director, writer, composer, and performer. His Broadway credits include The Magic Show, Seesaw, and Elizabeth I. In New York, he has directed Brothers at the LaMama Theater, and Goodbye, Harry at the Ballroom. He has also written and directed for numerous regional theaters including the Papermill Playhouse, the Lenox Art Center, Barter Theatre, Village Theatre, and is a past recipient of a Carbonell Award for “Best New Work.” In addition, Dr. Spangler directed Mame for the grand opening of the Jerry Herman Ring Theater at the University of Miami, and has composed music for several major Hollywood feature films. He has also written and produced 35 songs for the Emmy Award winning Romper Room & Friends (9 CBS/Fox videos achieving “Gold” status) and produced numerous television commercials for Hallmark, Folger’s, and Mercedes Benz, AT&T and other national accounts. Dr. Spangler is founder and artistic director of the internationally known Lovewell Institute, a not-for-profit arts education methodology for creating original educational works in theatre, music, dance, design, and video. As an Interdisciplinary Arts administrator and consultant, he has served in various capacities with the Miami City Ballet, Walt Disney World Entertainment, the Theatre League of South Florida, the Arts Advisory Committee for the Broward Public Schools, and was appointed by the Florida Secretary of State to serve as a grant panelist and evaluator for the State Division of Cultural Affairs.

NORMAN J. FEDDER, Ph. D.

NORMAN J. FEDDER, Ph. D. is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Theatre, Kansas State University; and now serves as Associate Director/Academic Coordinator and teaches in the Interdisciplinary Arts Program (IAP) of Nova Southeastern University. A member of the Kansas Theatre Hall of Fame, he is the author of a book on Tennessee Williams, many articles on dramatic literature, and 25 produced plays. He is Vice President of the Association for Jewish Theatre which he was instrumental in founding. He is also a Registered Drama Therapist/Board Certified Trainer, active in the National Association for Drama Therapy. He was honored by NADT by receiving its initial Raymond Jacobs Diversity Award and its Gertrude Schattner Award –– the highest honor the association can bestow. He founded Kansas State University’s renowned Drama Therapy Program and has developed and directs a Drama Therapy concentration within the IAP.


James E. Doan, Ph.D.

James E. Doan is Professor of Humanities, Humanities Major Chair and President of the South Florida Irish Studies Consortium, Inc. He holds a B.A. in Literature (English, French and Welsh) from U.C. Santa Cruz, an  M.A. in Folklore and Mythology from U.C.L.A. , an  M.A. in Celtic Languages and Literatures from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Folklore and Celtic Studies also from Harvard.  He was an Associate Professor at Chamberlayne Jr. College in Boston from 1981-88 and has been a Professor at Nova Southeastern University from 1988-present.
Publications include editions of Irish and Welsh poetry and prose; book-length studies of medieval and modern Irish-language poets; and articles on Celtic folklore and mythology.  Dr. Doan also co-edited Encyclopedia of Irish History and Culture (Macmillan Reference, 2004). His areas of expertise include Folklore and Mythology, Celtic Studies, Irish Studies, British and World Literature, and the Visual Arts (including painting, sculpture and architecture).  Dr. Doan teaches EIA 501: Interdisciplinary Arts in Society, Community, and School.


Alan S. Altman, Ed.D.

In the United States, Dr. Alan S. Altman, Ed.D., has performed on the stages of Carnegie Hall, the Cincinnati May Festival, and Lincoln Center; in Germany, at the Mannheim Staatsoper; and in Italy at the Bascillica of San Marco in Venice, and Teatro Olympico in Vicenza. Dr. Altman has been a professor at Nova Southeastern University from August 2002 to the present. He teaches all graduate level-courses in both the Graduate Teacher Education Program, and the Interdisciplinary Arts Program as well as Arts-based courses in the University's Doctoral Programs. His degrees are in International Studies (with a focus on both Soviet Central Asia and China), Liberal Studies (both graduate and undergraduate degrees), Trumpet Performance, Music Education, Educational Leadership and Curriculum and Instruction. He is an alumna of the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music, and holds degrees from, the University of Miami, Florida International University and Nova Southeastern University. He has written extensive syllabi for the Interdisciplinary Arts program at NSU in the areas of the History of Film, Musical Theatre, Aesthetics and Global Arts Infusion in an Interdependent World. He regularly teaches graduate-level courses in the Politics of Education, Research Writing, Curriculum and Instruction in Secondary School Social Sciences, Assessment and Evaluation and Human Growth and Development. Dr. Altman is a graduate of the National Science Foundation's Advanced Placement Psychology Institute at Texas A & M University, and has studied at Boston University, Miami University and The Ohio State University. His major
area of interest is the infusion of the globally interdependent world view of Joseph Nye and Robert Keohane into the artistic and social science curriculum. In his spare time, Dr. Altman mentors select students in his trumpet studio.


Tom Pearson, Ph.D.

Dr. Tom Pearson is the Arts Education Administrator for the Palm Beach County School District, and a twenty-nine-year veteran in the field of education. For twenty of those years, he taught band at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, and conducted two community bands. Dr. Pearson is a Past President of the Mississippi Bandmasters Association, where he taught band for 12 years before moving to Florida. Since moving to Florida, he has served as District Chairman for FBA District 14 and Chairman of the FBA Ethics Committee for two terms.
Dr. Pearson was the Magnet/Choice Program Specialist and Acting Director for the School District of Palm Beach County. His responsibilities included administration of the Magnet Schools Assistance Grant, student recruitment, and student assignment for magnet and choice programs. Dr. Pearson has been a presenter for student recruitment/assignment, and partnership and funding at the International Network of Schools for the Advancement of Arts Education and Magnet Schools of America. He has been an adjunct professor for Palm Beach Community College and Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Pearson has adjudicated for the Florida Bandmasters Association, Bands of America, and bands, winter guards, and drum corps throughout the United States.
He has served as the Governmental and Community Relations Chair for the Florida Music Educators’ Association, and as the ACE/FAAE Vice-President for Governmental Relations.  Dr. Pearson is currently serving as the President of the Florida Music Supervision Association, Vice-President for Coalitions for the Florida Alliance for Arts Education/Arts for a Complete Education, President of the Palm Beach County School District Staff Association, board member of the Florida Music Education Association, and board member of the Florida School Music Association.  He also serves on the education boards of The Norton Museum of Art and the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.
Dr. Pearson earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree and Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi. He earned an Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership and a Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University.
