Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center
3301 College Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33314
(free preview for NSU students on October 14, 2005 - 7:30 p.m.)
An IAP Capstone Production by IAP graduate candidates Melissa Axel (Creative Director), Cassie Allen (Technical Director), & Yvette Navarro (Visual/Multimedia Director)
Plus a team of students from University of Rome LaSapienza 's Cultural Event Planning & Promotion graduate program, collaborating on promotional materials and the organization of a very special post-show reception!
The Human Adventure is an original artistic production featuring live music, multimedia visuals, dramatic expression, and dance - all centering around our personal search for self-actualization. For graduate students Melissa Axel, Cassie Allen Barrett, and Yvette Navarro, this show is the final component of their studies in NSU's Interdisciplinary Arts Program (IAP). Known as the Capstone project within NSU's Fischler School of Education and Human Services, this work is the equivalent of a Master's thesis and is the culminating event of the IAP degree - an event conceived, written, created, and produced by the graduate student and the production team he or she assembles, incorporating two or more art forms and marketed for public performance.
The show will highlight key concepts of sociology, psychology, spirituality, and humanity made powerful, artistic, inspiring, and at times even humorous, by a host of creative intellectual talent, with original songs and script by Melissa Axel (Berklee College of Music, Heavy Rotation Records/Epic), professional technical production by Cassie Allen Barrett (NBC, ESPN, former Nightly Business Report director) and stunning visuals by broadcast graphics designer and artist Yvette Navarro (Univision, WPBT). Joining the three co-directors for a two-week collaboration on the production will be eleven graduate students and one professor from La Sapienza University of Rome, who will also take an NSU graduate course on art, culture, and spirit with IAP Artistic Director David Spangler.
The mission of NSU's Interdisciplinary Arts Program is to educate, nurture, and facilitate visionary and conceptual artists by offering a nurturing learning environment, resources, and tools to expand their knowledge, skills, experience, and entrepreneurship in the arts. This IAP Capstone project provides Axel, Barrett, and Navarro with hands-on experience in show creation, production, and promotion while connecting them with others in the community. It also fosters philanthropy by encouraging them to select a beneficiary since the IAP and its productions are not for profit. The co-directors selected the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts Scholarship Fund, to which all proceeds from the show will be donated - making it possible for youth to find their creative voices through the nationally recognized Lovewell Method used in its summer and after-school programs. Talented students from NSU's University School and the Lovewell arts education programs will also perform in the show.
Through original and familiar music, stunning multimedia visuals, intuitive dance, and interactive dramatic performance, The Human Adventure will open your eyes, ears, mind, and heart to the very personal journey that great thinkers like Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell have built careers exploring on behalf of all humankind - today's modern "hero story" within us all. |

Voice From Within
May 7, 2005 - 7:00 p.m. reception, program begins at 8:00 p.m.
Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center at Nova Southeastern University
3301 College Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33314
An Interdisciplinary Arts Program Performance
By IAP Graduate Candidate Gerri M. Caruncho
Join us for an evening filled with dance, drama and music, as we explore the life of Ernesto Freyre, III in Voice From Within. Born deaf, he listens to your words with his eyes depending on his acute visual and textile senses. Through choreography by IAP Graduate Candidate Gerri M. Caruncho, we hear what Ernesto sees in 10 dramatic scenes that take us on a journey from conception to present day using various forms of dance styles. Words many times are misconstrued and interpreted to fit into how one perceives a situation. The deaf population of the American society is forced to learn how to communicate with those who use the auditory process for communication. Hearing aids and special communication devices are used to help them understand what we are saying. This Capstone is a study of the various ways that communication can divide - and how understanding of situations by using movement, visual, and dramatic presentations can lead to a supportive type of experience. Some look, but do not see... hear, but do not listen. Let us see with our hearts and listen with understanding so that when barriers are broken, the knowledge of being different can be wonderful in Voice From Within.

A Journey Through African-American Music
March 30, 2005 - 7:00 pm
Mirimar High School Auditroium
3601 SW 89th Avenue, Miramar, FL 33025
An Interdisciplinary Arts Program Performance
By IAP Graduate Candidate Nicole C. McCall
A Journey through African-American Music will encompass musical sounds from the Kingdoms of Africa to the Middle Passages that led to slavery, which created what we know as Spirituals, from the cotton fields of the South to the Higher Heights of the Harlem Renaissance. This show will also take you back to the Lindy Hop era in the 1950s, when poodle skirts and sweaters were known as the perfect duo, as well as the '60s, remembering and making a political statement with James Brown's popular tune "I'm Black and I'm Proud." Then in the '70s, we were all wondering along with Marvin Gaye, "What's Going On?" You'll also hear songs from the '80s, when soulful sounds continued to emerge from the African-American community, later leading to a new sound of music called Rap/Hip Hop. Enjoy the musical styles of the Miramar High School Chorus and the Miramar dance team "Sophisticated Sapphires" under the direction of Christopher Jordan, Tiffany Davis, and IAP graduate candidate Nicole C. McCall as they take you on A Journey through African-American Music. |
