Judith Stein, Director, National Institute for Educational Options

Until 1995, Dr. Judith Stein was the Executive Director of the Division of Magnet/Innovative Programs for The Miami-Dade County Public Schools. She was the Director of Career Education until April 1989, and a national leader in the career education movement. She served as President for the American Association for Career Education, a policy board member of the American Vocational Association; Guidance Director and the Executive Chairman of the International Collaboration Conference on Career Education, held in Miami in March 1986. 

Dr. Stein served as the President of the State organization for Magnet Schools/Programs, 1991-92, Consortium of Magnets/Public Choice Schools (COM/PCS). She was founding President of that organization. 

In May of 1992, Dr. Stein was nominated to serve as Interim President of Magnet Schools of America (MSA), the national organization for magnet schools and programs. Dr. Stein served as President of MSA from May 1993 to May 1994, representing all parts of the United States and over 4,000 magnet programs and schools. 

Dr. Stein was educated at Smith College at Northampton, Massachusetts where she received a B.A. Degree. She also received her Master's Degree from Trenton State Teachers College in English Education, and her Doctorate in Legal Education from the University of Miami in 1972. 

Dr. Stein has been a school level administrator, having worked at American Senior High Schools during 1978-80 as an Assistant Principal for Guidance and Curriculum. Dr. Stein served on the Miami-Dade County Commission for the Status of Women Task Force, as well as on the National Advisory Board for the Boy Scouts of America/Exploring. 

Dr. Stein also served as President of the Florida Career Development Association, a Division of the Florida Association for Counseling and Development. She has been Program Chairman and Vice President of DELTA KAPPA GAMMA, a women's honor society, and was President of the Urban Guild for three years. Dr. Stein has been an adjunct professor at Florida International University in the Division of Vocational Education, and has been on the Advisory Board for the Youth Fair's Scholarship Committee and the Board of 4-H of Miami-Dade County. 

Dr. Stein has received numerous awards including the following: 

  • Outstanding Career Guidance Professional of 1989 from the Guidance Division of the American Vocational Association
  • Buddy McKay Guidance Award from Occupational Specialist and Guidance Association, September, 1988, State of Florida
  • State Award for National and State Leadership in Career Education from the Florida Department of Education
  • National Vocational Guidance Association Merit Award in 1984
  • "Women of the Year" from PHI DELTA KAPPA fraternity in 1983
  • Outstanding Student Service Worker of the Miami-Dade County Personnel and Guidance Association
  • Who's Who in American - Southeastern Region and Who's Who World Wide
  • Rotary Service Award from Rotary Clubs of Miami-Dade County

Dr. Stein is the Director of Development for Magnet Schools of America since 1995. In this position, she is responsible for the professional institutes for teachers and administrators for the national organization. She has developed liaison affiliate agreements with national organizations with specialty themes such as the NETWORK of Performing and Visual Arts Schools, MicroSociety. Inc., The National Career Academy Coalition, and the National Academy Foundation. She is presently developing the affiliate relationship between Nova Southeastern University, Fischler Center for the Advancement of Education at its National Institute for Educational Options.
