SOUTH FLORIDA WRITING PROJECT

The South Florida Writing Project (SFWP) advances the teaching of writing based upon the National Writing Project (NWP) model.  Through its extensive network of teachers, the National Writing Project seeks to promote exemplary instruction of writing in every classroom in America.

Teacher consultants, who have honed their skills by participating in the invitational institute, conduct the training of their peers according to the "teachers teaching teachers" concept.  The South Florida Writing Project currently offers five components.

·        Invitational Institute

A four-week summer institute for which experienced K-16 teachers apply in order to develop inservice workshops and expand their professional expertise

·        Open Institutes

One-week workshops open to all K-16 teachers to experience five in-depth strategies for teaching writing.

·        Workshops

Ø      Three-session trainings open to all K-16 teachers held after school throughout the year on specified topics

Ø      Personalized on-site training sessions designed for individual schools and groups; these sessions can be held at any time and are of any length

·        Conferences

Fall and spring one-day Saturday conferences where teacher-consultants present demonstration lessons

·        Summer Youth Writing Camps

Two-week sessions for rising fourth through eighth grade students who want to enhance their writing skills in a supportive environment while having fun
