Invitational Summer Institute

The Invitational Summer Institute is the heart of the National Writing Project. At each of the 165+ NWP sites nationwide, exemplary teachers of writing, from kindergarten through the university level, come together for an intensive 20-day summer institute where they research the latest theories and strategies in writing instruction, demonstrate and examine their own classroom practices, and develop their own personal writing skills.

The South Florida Writing Project's summer institute offers teachers a chance to share their best practices formally with their peers, examine the theory and research behind those practices as well as explore and inquire about other aspects of the reading and writing connection. They participate in inquiry groups where they reflect on the process of writing by writing themselves, and they participate in response groups where they review and edit the writing of others.

As a result of the summer institute, a corps of teachers is identified and trained to be National Writing Project Teacher Consultants who provide professional development to other teachers.
