AAC Post Master's Specialization

What Is Required in the AAC Post Master's Specialization Program?

  • 5 AAC classes (including application activities): some classes are offered online, while others are presented in face to face format only.
  • 1 Case Study Seminar (including development of a case study)
  • Preparation of the case study for possible publication in an AAC case study monograph.

What are the AAC Classes Like?
Each class offers 12-15 hours of instruction on varying AAC topics. Classes are taught by faculty members in the Programs in Speech, Language, and Communication Disorders and/or nationally known speakers from other institutions. Approximately 6-8 classes will be offered each calendar year. Participants select 5 courses in which to enroll in based on their individual needs and preferences. In face-to-face classes, information is presented through lecture, discussion, and interactive/hands-on activities. Online courses involve reviewing CD ROMs, Power Point presentations, threaded discussions, and synchronous chats. Participants are assigned 1-2 application activities for each class. These activities are designed to facilitate the integration and application of content knowledge to each participant's clinical/educational practice. Application activities are due to the instructor 4-8 weeks after the class meeting dates.

What Classes are Offered?
Approximately 6-8 courses are offered each calendar year. Participants may choose which courses to attend based on their own needs and interests. For dates and course titles in the upcoming year, click on Upcoming AAC Activities.

When and Where are the Courses Offered?
Classes are scheduled approximately 6-8 times/year.
Online courses are generally offered over a three-four week period. Three 1-hour chats are scheduled during which all participants are online simultaneously. These chats are normally held on Tuesdays from 8:00-9:00 p.m. EST. The remaining 9-12 hours of coursework is conducted at days, times, and places convenient to the participant. Additional information on the online courses, including technical requirements is provided on the Online AAC Learning page.
Face-to-face courses are always offered over a weekend for 1.5 - 2 days. Four to six hours of instruction are provided each day with additional time scheduled for breaks and lunch. The AAC classes are offered on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Davie.

What Costs Are Involved in the Program?
The cost of the entire program is $1000.00, payable upon enrollment of the first course.

How Long Does the Program Take?
The program can be completed in 12-18 months. The length of time depends, in part, on when the participant is accepted to the program and how quickly the participant progresses through the required components.

Is it Necessary to Have AAC Experience Prior to Applying to the Program?
No. Prior experience with the AAC population is preferred, but not required.

What is the Relationship Between this Program and the RESNA ATP Exam?
There is no relationship between the AAC Post Master's Specialization Program and the RESNA ATP Exam. Some of the content in the classes may be addressed in the RESNA exam. However, this program is not specifically intended to prepare anyone for that process.

Can I Get Graduate Credits for this Program?
At this point in time, the AAC Post-Master's Specialization is offered as a continuing education experience. Acceptance into this program does not give the participant graduate credit and does not constitute acceptance into any degree-seeking graduate program.

How Do I Get ASHA CEUs for the AAC Classes?
Complete the application activities, post-test, and ASHA bubble forms that are provided to you by the course instructor.
