The education minor provides an alternative career path for those individuals looking to get into the field of education. Additionally, there is consistent growth nationally in the need for secondary level content area teachers. For the past few years, math and science education have been on the Florida Department of Education's critical shortage list. The Undergraduate Teacher Education Program is offering a minor in education that will allow English, history, and life science majors the option of gaining initial experiences in grade 6-12 classrooms in addition to Elementary Education (K-6), Exceptional Student Education (K-12), and Prekindergarten Primary Education (Age 3 through Grade 3). The minor will give students a strong foundation in the teaching basics, necessary to be accepted into an alternative certification program and enter the teaching profession.
Students must have junior standing in order to enroll in these courses. In addition, the required 10 hours of clinical experiences for each course must be completed in a local elementary, middle, or high school. Students will be required to complete any security clearance processes required by the local school district.
All students minoring in education will need to complete the following:
EDUC 3330 Integrating Instructional Technology
ESOL 3340 Survey of TESOL
EDUC 3350 Survey of Exceptional Education
EDUC 3360 Education Psychology
EDUC 3520 Principles and Practices I
EDUC 4320 Classroom Management
